GROZNY, August 31 (RIA Novosti) - The parliamentary election campaign has started in Chechnya, the republic's election commission said Wednesday.
Moscow resident Amin Asmayev was the first to say he would run for the Popular Assembly, the lower house of the future Chechen parliament.
In 1995-1996, Asmayev headed the Chechen Republic's Supreme Council, which was an elected body restored after Doku Zavgayev had been appointed the republic's head.
Overall, 40 deputies will be elected to the Popular Assembly. The parliament consists of two houses: the Republican Council (18 seats) and the Popular Assembly. Elections are scheduled for November 27.
