Georgy Boos, a deputy speaker of the State Duma, said priorities for the region would be the enactment of a new version of a law granting it the status of a special economic zone.
Boos, who has been officially proposed as a candidate for the regional governor's seat, said the new law "should make the Made in Kaliningrad stamp competitive on the global market."
He said he also thought it was necessary to unite customs and passport control procedures for the Belarusian-Lithuanian and Lithuanian-Russia borders so that train passengers only had to go through passport control twice and not the current four times.
The Kalingrad legislature must consider the candidature of Boos for the governor's seat no later than October 16 now that it has been proposed by the president's envoy to the Northwestern Federal District, Ilya Klebanov.
