Russian Mission Control reports Progress' smooth exit and disposal

MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) - The cargo spacecraft Progress M-53, used as a supply vehicle for the International Space Station (ISS), was deorbited and disposed of at 6:13 p.m., Moscow time, (2:13 p.m. GMT), Wednesday, the Russian Mission Control reported.

Fragments of the spacecraft that did not burn upon reentry plunged into the Pacific near Nativity Island, a Mission Control spokesperson said. The legendary Russian orbital station Mir ended up here in February 2000, after 15 years of service.

The launch of a new supply craft, the Progress M-54, is scheduled for 5:08 p.m., Moscow time (1:08 p.m. GMT), September 8. It will dock with the station September 10 at 6:49 p.m., Moscow time (2:49 p.m. GMT), bringing in about 2.5 metric tons of supplies for the ISS' 11th crew, including food, water, fuel, oxygen, equipment and packages from the crew members' families.
