MAKHACHKALA, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - Four militant groups totaling about 30 people are operating in Daghestan, a Russian republic in the North Caucasus neighboring on Chechnya, a high-ranking police officer told a press conference Monday.

Daghestani Interior Minister Lieutenant General Adilgerei Magomedtagirov said three militants had been detained in Daghestan last week.

"A serious blow was dealt to the militant underground - many leaders were eliminated and their liaison system destroyed, as well as arms caches and ammo bases. We know exactly how many terrorists are still at large," the minister said.

Suspected militant Temirbulat Zubairov, 36, was present at the press conference and repented for what he had done. He has assisted officers, helping prevent several terrorist acts and confiscate self-made explosive devices.

Zubairov said he had been involved in five terrorist acts in Daghestan, including the blowing up a bus of policemen on August 18 and a blast in Makhachkala on September 2.
