TYUMEN, September 13 (RIA Novosti, Alexander Perestoronin) - Well-preserved mammoth remains have been discovered on the Yamal Peninsula in northern Russia, local museum officials said Tuesday.
The remains of a male mammoth, who died some 10,000 years ago, were found during a museum expedition. Yamal scientists believe the ancient creature died at the age of 30 or 40 of some grave disease.
Only five similar finds have been previously uncovered across the world. The best preserved remains of adult mammoths are exhibited at the Zoological Museum in St. Petersburg and the Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk in East Siberia.
