ST. PETERSBURG, September 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will implement major environmental projects in the Baltic Sea, which neighboring Baltic countries are interested in, President Vladimir Putin said at the opening ceremony of a new water treatment plant in St. Petersburg Thursday.
Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson and Finnish President Tarja Halonen also attended the ceremony.
Persson said that cooperation in the construction of the southwestern plant, for which the European Union provided loans, would help ensure the purity of the Baltic Sea in the future.
"Sweden invested 100 million Swedish kroner (about $13 million) in this project," Persson said. "I am convinced this was a good investment."
Halonen said that the experience with the treatment plant could be used in other projects.
