MOSCOW, September 29 (RIA Novosti, Yevgeny Ionov) -- Moscow will host an international conference, Sport and Peace, on October 2-5, the head of the Russian Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sport said Thursday.
Vyacheslav Fetisov said: "I believe Moscow was chosen to hold such an important event as a sign of appreciation of Russia's sporting achievements in the world."
Fetisov said that Russia, using its experience as a multi-ethnic state, wanted to show the importance of sports development, especially sports for young people, in uniting people of different ethnic backgrounds, religions and social layers.
Fetisov said that sports united people. "Sports events attract great attention like nothing else in the world," he said.
The heads of state sport administrations from more than 70 countries, senior officials from the UN, Council of Europe, and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), as well as members of the Russian and Moscow governments, famous athletes and Olympic champions will attend the conference in the Russian capital.
The conference will be held as part of the UN General Assembly's International Year of Sport and Physical Culture.
