MOSCOW, October 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's top 400 companies increased their revenue by 30.7% in 2004 to $418.9 billion, a rating agency said in its annual survey of the country's largest companies.

According to Expert RA, the largest revenue growth was observed in metallurgy (83% up on the previous year), retail trade (62%) and telecommunications (37%).

The oil and gas sector prevails in the rating's structure and accounts for 34% of the revenue covered by the survey. The share of ferrous metallurgy is 9% and transport comes in third with 9%.

But the agency says the high tax burden is restraining the development of the oil and gas industry despite growing world oil prices and narrows the possibilities for oil and gas companies to implement projects to develop new deposits, build infrastructure and replace production assets.

"As a result, at the peak of the favorable market situation, the growth of revenue flow from oil exports into investment has decelerated. Besides, some sectors, metallurgy in particular, have come to face lower world prices for their products," the agency said.

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom was the rating's leader with $33.892 billion in revenue. It was followed by Russia's largest oil company, LUKoil, with $28.81 billion. Last year, Russia's electricity utility, Unified Energy System, earned $23.582 billion, state-run Russian Railways brought in $22.884 billion, Yukos hauled in $22.1 billion and the British-Russian joint venture TNK-BP took in $14.298 billion.

The state-run bank, Sberbank, the only financial institution from among the top ten raw materials companies in the rating, earned $7.537 billion. Norilsk Nickel metals producer came in tenth with $6.742 billion.
