MADRID, October 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made a statement Monday condemning the attacks on students from Spain and Peru in Voronezh in southwest Russia.
On Sunday, three 18-year-old foreign students at Voronezh State University, two from Peru and one from Spain, were attacked and beaten near the Olimpic sports center on the outskirts of the city. One of the Peruvians died on the spot from wounds inflicted during the beating. The other two students are in hospital after undergoing operations.
Lavrov expressed his condolences to the victims' families.
The Russian government "is taking measures to fight extremism and racism like any other European country," he said.
The identity of the assailants is unknown. The Russian Interior Ministry said it is overseeing criminal investigations into the incident.
