Peruvian student's murder sparks protest in Voronezh

VORONEZH, October 11 (RIA Novosti) - Some seventy foreign students took to the streets crying "let us live!" in Voronezh Tuesday to demand better protection against hate crimes following Sunday's murder of a Peruvian student.

The students gathered for the improvised rally outside the regional government headquarters, chanting their plea for life.

An Interior Ministry official came out to assure them that regional law-enforcement agencies were doing everything possible to solve the murder of Angelis Urtado Enrique Arturo.

"Of course, we cannot provide every foreign student with a policeman. Especially in the woodlands, where [this particular] crime occurred. But we guarantee that the crime will be solved shortly."

A criminal investigation is underway, but no suspects have yet been detained in connection with the student's murder, the regional prosecutor's senior aide said Tuesday.

The 19-year-old architecture student from Peru and three companions were attacked by about fifteen Russian youths in a downtown recreation area in Voronezh, 310 miles south of Moscow. Arturo was stabbed to death and two of his friends - a fellow Peruvian and a Spaniard - were severely injured.
