MOSCOW, October 12 (RIA Novosti) -- World No. 1 Maria Sharapova made into the quarterfinals of Russia's premier tennis tournament, the Kremlin Cup, on Wednesday, but only after her opponent retired due to injury.
Sharapova was losing 1:6, 1:4 to Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany in a second-round match when the German player sprained her ankle. After a long pause, Groenefeld returned to the court, but then broke down.
Sharapova will now face the winner of the match between Russian Dinara Safina and Australian Samantha Stosur.
