NALCHIK, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - Twelve civilians and twelve policemen were killed in the attack of the North Caucasus city of Nalchik, a Russian deputy prosecutor general said Thursday.
Vladimir Kolesnikov added that 20 militants had been eliminated and 12 detained.
Seven gunmen are still entrenched at a Nalchik police precinct and two in a central store, he said.
Kolesnikov also said that the masterminds of the attack on the city, which is the capital of the republic of Karbadino-Balkariya, had been identified.
"They are Anzor Astemirov and Ilyaz Gerchikhayev," he said. "They are prominent wahhabites and are wanted in Karabdino-Balkariya and Ingushetia for particularly serious crimes."
"About 80-100 militants attacked at 9.00 a.m. [local time]," he said.
As of 4 p.m. local time (12 p.m. GMT), three Nalchik hospitals had received 88 people who were wounded in the attack on the city.
