MOSCOW/HELSINKI, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russian and Norwegian diplomats are discussing the circumstances surrounding the detention of a Russian trawler in the Barents Sea, the Russian Embassy in Oslo said Monday. The Elektron fishing boat was detained in the fisheries protection zone of Spitsbergen, which Moscow does not recognize. The Norwegian side has accused the fishing crew of "documentation violations and throwing away their catch." Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten reported on its Web site Saturday that the country's coastguard had stopped the Russian trawler for inspection, which revealed several violations. The Elektron was detained and ordered to proceed to a nearby Norwegian port.

A coastguard officer said the Russian trawler had obeyed the order at first and then suddenly altered its course.

A Norwegian coastguard vessel then opened fire on the fishing boat with a Norwegian inspector and crewmembers aboard.
