MAKHACHKALA, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Supreme Court of Daghestan sentenced Khanali Umakhanov to four years in jail for making explosives after a jury cleared him of terrorism and murder.

Prosecutors accused Umakhanov of involvement in a blast attack in the Daghestani town of Kaspiisk in May 2002 when more than 40 servicemen and civilians, including children, were killed and dozens wounded.

On Thursday morning, the jury cleared Umakhanov of terrorism and murder charges but found him guilty of purchasing and then handing over to terrorists a remote to a mine that went off in Kaspiisk. The Supreme Court later sentenced him to four years in jail.

Umakhanov, whose trial began in June on charges of murder, terrorism, and banditry, was arrested in Moscow in 2002 for a pocket theft.
