Russian figure skater wins first Grand Prix event

MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Yelena Sokolova won gold at the 2005 Skate America figure skating competition in women's singles in the United States.

The silver and bronze medals went to an American and Japanese figure skaters.

Russia's Yulia Obertas and Sergei Slavnov won the bronze in pairs and their compatriots Oksana Domnina and Maksim Shabalin won the bronze as well in ice dancing.

Skate America was the first Grand Prix Figure Skating competition. The other events will take place in Canada, China, France, Russia and Japan. Tokyo will host the Grand Prix finals from December 16 to 18.
