PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - The overwhelming majority of electors have voted in favor of the Kamchatka Region and the Koryak Autonomous Area (Russia's Far East) to unite into a single Federation member, a regional electoral commission official said Sunday.
Anatoly Gasiatulin, the deputy chairman of the regional electoral commission, said 84.15% voted for and 15.12% against the unification of Kamchatka and Koryakia, after 77.84% of referendum ballots were checked in the Kamchatka Region.
In Koryakia, 20 out of 30 electoral commissions checked referendum ballots indicating that 88.85% voted for and 10.08% against the unification.
The preliminary voter turnout was 77.75% in the Koryak Autonomous Area and 52.2% in Kamchatka.
On Sunday, the Kamchatka Region and the Koryak Autonomous Area held a referendum on their merger into a single Federation member.
