Russia, South Ossetia propose solution to South Ossetian conflict

MOSCOW, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian and South Ossetian co-chairmen of the Mixed Control Commission for the solution of the South Ossetian conflict proposed returning to the idea of a resolution based on a trilateral scheme offered up by the Georgian and South Ossetian leaders.

Russian co-Chairman of the MCC Valery Kenyaikin said the first stage of the trilateral approach imposes the demilitarization of the conflict zone and a restoration of trust. The second stage envisages the social and economic rehabilitation of the conflict zone, and the third seeks an all-round political settlement, including the definition of the South Ossetia's status, he said.

Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli, currently on a visit to the United States, met today with Head of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Richard Lugar. Nogaideli asked Lugar that the U.S. Senate support a separate plan of peaceful initiatives, proposed by the Georgian president, to solve the same conflict.

Nogaideli intends to officially present Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili's new plan at the OSCE Council session in Vienna next week, a source in the premier's staff said.

"Nogaideli will present a detailed plan with all steps necessary for the final solution of the conflict," the source said.
