YEREVAN, October 28 (RIA Novosti, Gamlet Matevosyan) - The United States has allocated more than $6 million for parliamentary and presidential elections in Armenia, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Evans said Friday.
The funds will be aimed at ensuring the preparation of transparent and fair parliamentary elections in 2007 and presidential elections in 2008, he said.
Through a cooperation program, help will be provided in drawing up candidate lists, spreading information to the electorate and regulating judicial proceedings related to the election process.
Implementing these measures will provide Armenia with a golden opportunity for confirming democracy and allow the country to enter a new stage of democratic transformation, the ambassador said.
The program has been approved by the U.S. Department of State, which assigned the project's implementation to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its partners.
