Businessmen urge prosecutors to oversee Renaissance Capital fraud case

MOSCOW, October 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russian business unions have insisted that the Prosecutor General's Office control the investigation into alleged fraud involving a major Russian investment group and the Mikhailov mining and ore processing company.

"We expect the Prosecutor General's Office to make sure that the investigation is legal and impartial," the business unions' joint statement, which was circulated Friday, said.

The statement was signed by President of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Alexander Shokhin; Boris Titov, the chairman of the Delovaya Rossiya public organization; and Sergei Borisov, the president of small and medium-sized business organization Opora Rossii.

Oleg Kiselyov, the head of the Renaissance Capital investment group, was charged in absentia October 21 with fraud relating to Mikhailov shares.

Kiselyov's lawyer, Alexander Asnis, said Friday that a Moscow court had sanctioned the arrest of his client who was receiving medical treatment overseas.

In their statement, the businessmen said that the law did not protect property rights well enough, which led to illegal takeovers in violation of business ethics.

"Hence, we must say that judicial reform is the main problem in the Mikhailov case," the statement said.

The businessmen also said they supported the Supreme Court of Arbitration's resolution to streamline economic justice and advocated revising arbitration procedures.
