MOSCOW, November 11 (RIA Novosti) - A Moscow court sentenced the former governor of the Tver region, Central Russia, to five years in jail for abuse of power Friday.
The Russian Prosecutor General's Office accused Vladimir Platov of illegally transferring state medium-term bonds worth $17.4 million belonging to the Tver region to a company run by a criminal boss. This action had serious consequences, including a shortage of funds to cover the costs of the heating season in the region.
Platov will serve his term in a standard prison facility.
Platov's lawyers said they would appeal against the sentence.
