The ministry's official spokesman, Alexander Yakovenko, said Russian diplomats and the Congolese Foreign Ministry's visiting secretary general had met in Moscow Monday for consultations on cooperation via the UN, with the CDR being one of the five countries elected as Security Council non-permanent members for 2006 and 2007.
Yakovenko said Russia and the DRC had achieved "quite a high level of political contacts" and that they had similar perspectives on key issues of world politics, including "maintaining strategic stability, countering terrorism and other challenges of the 21st century, shaping a democratic world order and creating a comprehensive system of international security and mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of conflicts based on the UN Charter and universal principles of international law."
