TBILISI, November 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is ready to post bail for Russian servicemen arrested in Georgia on suspicion of border violations, a spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Georgia said Wednesday.

Yevgeny Ivanov said: "Russia is insisting on a meeting between embassy officials and the arrested servicemen as soon as possible."

He added that Russian officials were doing their best to secure the most lenient punishment for their compatriots within the framework of Georgian legislation.

A Georgian court sentenced three Russian military officers, who were arrested Tuesday for illegal border crossing, to three months of pre-trial detention. Under Georgian law, prosecutors will have three months to gather evidence before the trial begins.

Ivanov also said Russia had proposed to hand the Russian officers over to the commanders of the Russian forces in the South Caucasus for punishment.

Ivanov said the embassy would continue negotiating with Georgian authorities over the issue.

A truck carrying three Russian officers and military property headed for a Russian military base in Georgia was detained by local military police November 22. The officers were on their way to Batumi, the capital of Georgia's autonomy Adjaria, where Russian forces in the South Caucasus are based.

The three officers are facing a possible five years in jail under Georgian law for border violation charges.
