The All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) survey, released Friday, found that 4% of those polled bought even more poultry meat since information on bird flu appeared and just 10% bought less.
According to the poll, almost half (47%) think the bird flu problem has been widely discussed due to fears of bird flu epidemics among humans, but one-third of those polled said media-heated fears were due to the ''competition at the [poultry meat] market". Another 6% of respondents said fears appeared as a result of "the intrigues of gene-modified food producers".
However, 79% of Russians think that domestic poultry production might be destroyed due to bird flu, with 29% calling the possibility high and another 49% saying the possibility simply exists.
Of those polled, 46% said they had never talked about bird flu with relatives or friends, while 15% said they discussed it often and 37% said they discussed bird flu once or twice.
The survey was conducted on November 19-20 and included 1,600 people from 153 settlements and cities in 46 regions, territories and republics of Russia with a 3.4% margin of error.
