MOSCOW, November 28 (RIA Novosti) - The concentration of chemicals in Russia's Far Eastern Amur River, threatened with contamination by a toxic spill from China, will not exceed the maximum allowable concentration (mac) levels by threefold even in the worst scenario, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday.
"Even in the worst development, the concentration of phenol and nitrobenzene in the Amur on the Russian [-Chinese] border will not top the mac threefold," the Emergency Situations Ministry said, quoting an expert center.
On November 13, an explosion at a petrochemical plant in China released about 100 metric tons of chemicals into the Songhua, a tributary of the Amur.
"Chemical concentration around Khabarovsk is not expected to exceed mac at all," the ministry said.
According to ministry, about 70 towns and villages, or over a million people, could be affected by the pollution.
