Georgian opposition demands secession from CIS

TBILISI, November 28 (RIA Novosti) -- The opposition in the Georgian parliament is insisting on discussing the issue of Georgia's withdrawal from the CIS, an opposition leader said Monday.

"During the meeting of the parliamentary bureau, we want to find out whether the parliamentary majority is willing to support [Georgia's] secession from the Commonwealth of Independent States," said Kakha Kukava, a leader of the Democratic Front faction in the parliament.

"If that is not the case, I insist on behalf of my faction that we continue work on the draft of the resolution on Georgia's withdrawal from the CIS and will include the issue in the parliament's agenda," he said.

Last week, David Berdzenishvili, a member of the Democratic Front faction, proposed discussing the withdrawal in parliament.

Speaker Nino Burdzhanadze and the parliamentary majority backed the initiative, although Burdzhanadze said it made sense to discuss the issue only if the opposition also took responsibility for further decisions.

However, following the recent statements by Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli that the government was not currently planning to consider Georgia's withdrawal from the CIS, the opposition began to discuss tabling a motion on the issue.
