MOSCOW, November 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russia supports the Asian candidate for the UN Secretary General, according to a joint statement concluding talks between the Russian and Thai Foreign Ministries Tuesday.
"Russia has reiterated its position on the next UN Secretary General in favor of the Asian candidate and took it into consideration that the candidacy of Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai had been backed by ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations]," the document said.
At their meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Thai counterpart Surakiat Sathirathai discussed the situation in the Middle East and Iraq and that on the Korean peninsula.
"Russia and Thailand are for further expansion of partnership on the international arena in the interests of a fair, democratic world order based on strict observance of the UN Charter and international law," the statement said.
