MOSCOW, November 30 (RIA Novosti, Alexei Peslyak) - Legal music that can be downloaded on the Internet accounts for only 1-2% of the total, a well-known Russian music producer said Wednesday.

Oleg Nesterov said Russia lacked a legislative basis regulating the sale of music on the Internet. "Russia has a law that is designed to protect music from piracy, regulating the sale of music on the Internet and protecting copyright, but it will not come into force until November 2006," he said.

The producer said the number of pirated CDs was currently falling, as piraters have moved over to copying and selling illegal DVDs.

According to Nesterov, reducing prices of licensed products was not a proper way of fighting against piracy.

He said new ways of selling music should be introduced. "For example, music companies can sell ringtones and realtones to mobile operators" that are currently available on the Internet.

Ways of fighting against Internet piracy are imperfect even in the West, he said.
