* Founded: 2001 when Unity and Fatherland-All Russia (both established in 1999) merged. Commonly referred to as the "party of power"

* Co-leaders: Boris Gryzlov, speaker of the State Duma, Mayor of Moscow Yury Luzhkov, President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiyev, Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu

* Ideology: Defines itself as democratic and centrist, designed "to ensure consistency between the government's policy and people's interests," mould public opinion, and to express people's views

* Membership: Russia's best-represented party with 2,555 branches across the country and 953,000 members, among them senior officials and dignitaries. Dominates the State Duma, many regional legislatures, and claims many governors as members

* Results: Won a little over 37% of the popular vote in the 2003 parliamentary elections; in 1999 Unity and Fatherland-All Russian gained a combined 24.3%.
