Russia, EU building common information space

BRUSSELS, December 7 (RIA Novosti, Alexander Shishlo) - Russia and the European Union are making good progress in their efforts to build a common information space, the Russian Information and Communications Minister said Wednesday.

Speaking after a joint session of EU leaders and senior officials of the Russian government in Brussels, Leonid Reiman said Russia would like to coordinate its position on Internet control with the EU.

He said the Russian authorities were against heavy regulation of the Internet, as this would stop the Web from being a free zone, but that they deemed state involvement necessary to combat cyber crime, primarily in online commerce and medicine.

Reiman said it was not the means of distributing information that should be subject to government control, but the legal relations between information suppliers and consumers. This would help authorities detect irresponsible suppliers providing fraudulent information, he said.
