MOSCOW, December 19 (RIA Novosti)

Below is a summary of the main security-related events in the North Caucasus on December 19, 2005

* The new Chechen parliament called on all members of illegal armed gangs to lay down their weapons

* President of Checnya Alu Alkhanov called on the number of federal troops to be cut in the republic

* Alkhanov also said he thought too little was being done to capture Russia's terrorist no.1 Shamil Basayev, who has claimed responsibility for the Beslan school tragedy and numerous other terrorist attacks

* The deputy speaker of Chechnya's new parliament, Sultan Bilimkhanov, was said to be recovering after a minor car crash at the weekend

* A police spokesman said two men suspected of perpetrating several serious crimes in Chechnya had been apprehended in the west of the republic

* An attempt on the life of a policemen in Ingushetia was foiled in the town of Karabulak, to the northeast of regional center of Nazran
