MOSCOW, December 21 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian carrier rocket Soyuz was launched from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan at 6.39 p.m. GMT Wednesday, a Mission Control source said.

Soyuz will carry the Progress-M55 cargo ship to the International Space Station.

Progress-M55 will deliver more than two metric tons of cargo to the ISS, ranging from food and New Year presents for astronauts William McArthur and Valery Tokarev, to water, fuel and scientific equipment for the next expedition to the station.

The spaceship is set to dock with the ISS on December 23 at 7.54 p.m. GMT.
