St. Petersburg, December 27 (RIA Novosti) - A rally Monday of foreign students who have been demanding greater security in Russia's second largest city of St. Petersburg has dispersed.
More than 150 foreign students and representatives of public movements demanded greater security from city administration Chairman of the Committee for Science and Education Alexander Viktorov and handed over an open letter addressed to Governor Valentina Matviyenko.
Viktorov admitted the city was facing the problem of extremism and said law enforcers were doing their best to solve it.
Police were on hand to ensure order at the rally and no violations were reported.
St. Petersburg's foreign community has suffered from a string of racist attacks in recent years, many of which have resulted in the death of the victims.
