"The details and timeframe of Adamov's extradition are being discussed by the two country's justice ministries," Igor Petrov, press attache for the Russian Embassy in Bern, said. The official did not specify the date of extradition, saying he doubted it would happen before the new year.
Adamov, 63, was arrested in Bern in May at the request of U.S. authorities on accusations of misappropriating the $9 million granted to Russia for improving the safety of its nuclear facilities.
Folko Galli, the spokesman for the Swiss justice department, said earlier the Swiss and Russian authorities were doing their best to arrange Adamov's extradition as soon as possible. He said the European convention on extradition stipulated that the procedure be implemented within 15 days after the court's decision, but the period could be extended to 30 days.
On October 3, the Swiss Federal Justice Department announced its decision to extradite the former Russian minister to the U.S.
Adamov's defense team filed an appeal with the Swiss Supreme Court in Lausanne in November.
On December 22, the Lausanne court upheld the appeal and ruled that the ex-minister be extradited to Russia because it had been the first to submit an extradition request.
Stefan Wehrenberg, a lawyer for Adamov, said his client insists he is not guilty and intends to fight the accusations of Russian and U.S. judiciaries upon his return to Russia.
