GROZNY, January 6 (RIA Novosti) - A by-election for a seat in the parliament of the North Caucasus republic of Chechnya will be held this year, the Chechen election commission chairman said Friday.
Ismail Baikhanov said the need for a by-election arose after the deputy speaker of the republic's legislature, Sultan Bilimkhanov, died in hospital following car crash on January 2. The by-election will be held in March or October, in accordance with federal laws.
Bilimkhanov ran for parliament in single-constituency voting in the Nozhai-Yurt District, representing United Russia, commonly referred to as "the party of power".
