BISHKEK, January 26 (RIA Novosti, Yuliya Orlova) - A lawyer for the ousted Kyrgyz president said Thursday that Askar Akayev was not linked with the recent scandal around fuel supplies for an American military base in Kyrgyzstan.

"Askar Akayev had no connection to the sale of jet fuel in the Manas airport."

Earlier reports in the Kyrgyz and U.S. media said some Kyrgyz firms allegedly owned by the former president's family had been selling jet fuel to the Manas base at excessive prices.

Maximovich said the base's officials, who bought the fuel directly from suppliers, had every opportunity to choose the suppliers and discus the price.

The lawyer also refuted a statement made by Kyrgyz Ambassador to the U.S. Zamira Sadykova that she has information on the Akayev family's bank accounts in the United States.

"Askar Akayev has never had bank accounts in the United States," he said.
