Russia imposes restrictions on shuttle-traders

MOSCOW, January 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov has signed a decree restricting the tax-free regime for shuttle-traders, the economic ministry said Thursday.

Russian shuttle-traders, individuals who shuttle across the border, buy goods from cheap sources and return to Russia to sell them for profit, were previously exempted from customs duties on small quantities of certain goods.

The Economic Development and Trade Ministry said the new regulations stipulated that shuttle-traders are allowed to import goods tax-free from trips taken once a month instead of once a week. The new decree also limits the aggregated tax-free weight of imported goods to 30kg (66lbs.) instead of current 50kg (110lbs.).
