ST. PETERSBURG, January 31 (RIA Novosti) - The commander of the Russian Navy said Tuesday that Russia's fleet would be equipped with four modern series of submarines.
Admiral Vladimir Masorin, currently in St. Petersburg for a conference, said the Borei series nuclear-powered submarines would be basic for the Russian Navy, along with new multipurpose submarines armed with submarine-launched cruise missiles (SLCM).
Masorin also said design works on a new type of nuclear submarines would begin soon.
The commander said the latest diesel powered submarine, the St. Petersburg, which is being built under the Lada project, would be commissioned this year after trials are completed.
The admiral said four new types of submarines would be enough to modernize Russia's submarine fleet.
"We consider this enough to fulfill the goal of the submarine forces now, and in future," he said.
