MOSCOW, February 1 (RIA Novosti) - The president of the Russian Tennis Federation said Wednesday he was largely satisfied with the performance of the country's players at this year's Australian Open, the season's first Grand Slam event.

Shamil Tarpishchev said Russia's women had proved their competitiveness among the world's top players, although there were mistakes and issues of mental stamina for world No.9 Yelena Dementyeva and No.13 Anastasia Myskina.

"The tournament revealed mistakes in Dementyeva's pre-season training," he said. "She needed to prepare by playing in several [lower level] tournaments. Myskina played well enough, but she was lacking in psychological confidence. She also needed to play in an easier tournament to gain confidence."

Tarpishchev said he had been satisfied with the results of young Russian players Anna Chakvetadze, Yelena Vesnina, and Maria Kirilenko, whose further progress in the WTA ratings would mainly depend on their ability to stabilize their game.

As for top Russian players Maria Sharapova and Nadezhda Petrova, currently ranked No.4 and No.7, respectively in the WTA ratings, Tarpishchev said both had good chances to win any tournament.

"In general, our women players are progressively becoming more competitive among the elite, Tarpishchev said.

The tennis chief also mentioned Nikolai Davydenko, currently No.6 in the ATP rankings, who was stopped short in a difficult quarterfinals' match by No.1 Roger Federer of Switzerland. "He was capable of beating Federer," he said.

Commenting on Russia's other players in the tournament, Tarpischev said Igor Andreyev and Mikhail Yuzhny would progress after recovering from their injuries, and Dmitry Tursunov, potentially a top-twelve player, needed to improve his game.
