KIEV, February 14 (RIA Novosti, Pavel Dulman) - Russia and Ukraine plan to establish a joint organization to combat bird flu, the Ukrainian president said Tuesday.
"I think a bilateral commission or some other organization will be set up soon to coordinate science, preventative measures and other issues related to the fight against the problem," Viktor Yushchenko said at a meeting with David Nabarro, the UN system coordinator for avian and human influenza.
The president informed UN representatives about Ukrainian authorities' actions to counter the spread of bird flu. He said the country had asked the EU and U.S. for assistance with the efforts.
Nabarro said Ukraine' response to the recent bird flu outbreak in the Crimea was praiseworthy, as it prevented the virus from spreading throughout the country, and that the UN would consider granting aid to Ukraine in this regard.
