MAKHACHKALA, February 20 (RIA Novosti) - Daghestan's legislature approved Mukhu Aliyev's candidacy as first president of the North Caucasus republic Monday.
A total of 105 deputies voted for Vladimir Putin's nominee and only one voted against.
Aliyev, 65, thanked the Russian president for his confidence.
"I assure you that Daghestan will take a worthy place not only in the Southern Federal District but in Russia as a whole," he said.
"I will take responsibility with deputies of the People's Assembly and the government to ensure security in Daghestan and return its faith in the justice of laws," Aliyev added.
Aliyev has been the speaker of Daghestan's People's Assembly since 1995.
On Wednesday, Magomedali Magomedov, who had headed the local governing body, the State Council, since 1994 and had been head of the republic for 19 years, announced his early resignation to President Putin.
