On Fatherland Defenders' Day, February 23, commemorating the foundation of the Red Army in 1918, an estimated 10,000 people will march across central Moscow to Karl Marx's statue opposite the Bolshoi Theater.
"Every year this date is not only about the Soviet Army or Fatherland Defenders' Day. It is also a good reason to remind the authorities and society about the unhealthy environment in which our army serves, and the humiliating state of the army, which does not meet modern demands," Ivan Melnikov, a parliamentary member and party's deputy chairman, said.
Army reforms have become a focus of public debate recently, following the January hazing attack in the city of Chelyabinsk, which left a private severely disabled; criminal investigations were also launched into a series of other similar cases.
"This year, February 23 will have particular significance. These problems are now visible to everyone," the party chairman said.
Besides the KPRF, the Movement in Support of Peace, the Union of Soviet Officers and other public organizations are among the organizers of the rally.
