"Public festivities are continuing all around Russia," Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Chekalin said. "So far, we have not registered any serious violations of order."
The officials said additional security measures had been taken during the holiday.
"Enhanced police units are on duty in cities and towns," Chekalin said. "A total of 40,000 police officers and interior ministry troops have been deployed to maintain order on the streets."
The official said the police prevented a series of terrorist acts on the eve of the February 23 holiday.
"Operatives discovered a cache with weapons and explosives in a building in [the Chechen capital] Grozny, which terrorists planned to use for acts of terror and sabotage," the deputy minister said.
He also congratulated police officers, interior troops personnel and veterans with the Fatherland Defenders Day.
