Russian foreign minister to meet top U.S. officials

MOSCOW, March 3 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian foreign minister will meet with the U.S. leadership on various international issues during his visit to the United States on March 6-8, the official spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

"The program includes talks with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, meetings with U.S. President George Bush, members of Congress and distinguished American political scientists," Mikhail Kamynin said.

The spokesman said that Minister Sergei Lavrov planned to discuss a wide range of international issues and aspects of bilateral relations.

"The topics for talks include the situation in various regions of the world, first of all in conflict regions, including the Middle East, issues of combating international terrorism and of the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction," Kamynin said.

He also said priority issues that are a matter of the discussion within the context of Russia's presidency in the Group of Eight club of rich nations would be raised as well, including issues of energy security.

The spokesman said the sides would also discuss concrete aspects of mutually advantageous cooperation in the economy, science, technology and humanitarian programs.

"In particular, these are the issues on the completion of Russian-U.S. talks on Russia's accession to the WTO [World Trade Organization], development of dialogue in energy sector and other issues," the spokesman added.

Minister Lavrov will pay an official visit to Canada on March 5-6 prior to his visit to the United States.
