Alcohol poisoning killed 35,900 Russians in 2005 - report

The preliminary report published by the Federal Service for the Supervision of Consumer Protection and Welfare says 13.4% of all accidental deaths in Russia are caused by poisoning from alcohol and alcohol derivates. In 2003 and 2004, alcohol poisoning caused 40,567 and 42,715 deaths respectively.

MOSCOW, March 20 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's consumer rights watchdog said Monday that 35,900 people died from alcohol poisoning in 2005.

The preliminary report published by the Federal Service for the Supervision of Consumer Protection and Welfare says 13.4% of all accidental deaths in Russia are caused by poisoning from alcohol and alcohol derivates. In 2003 and 2004, alcohol poisoning caused 40,567 and 42,715 deaths respectively.

The officials are especially worried about the rise of teen-age alcoholism, 17.7 per 100,000 people.

"In 2004, the number of people suffering from alcoholism reached 2,369,000 and constituted 1.6% of the population," the report said.

According to the document, alcohol addiction grew 14.1% in 2000-2004, and the trend continued in 2005.
