* At the 2006 European weightlifting championship in Wladyslawowo, Poland (through May 7):

- Vladislav Lukanin won silver in the men's 77kg category lifting a total of 352kg (152kg in the snatch and 200kg in the clean and jerk). Gevorg Davtyan of Armenia won gold with a total of 360 kilograms (165 + 195). Georgi Makov of Bulgaria finished third with a total of 351 kilograms (159 + 192).

- Natalya Gagarina won silver in the women's +75kg category with a total of 271kg (120kg in the snatch and 151kg in the clean and jerk). Olha Korobka of Ukraine lifted a total of 290kg (126 + 164) to win gold. Yordanka Apostolova of Bulgaria took bronze with a total of 245kg (113 + 132)

* At the 2006 UEFA European Under-17 Championship's eight-team finals in Luxembourg (through May 14):
