ST. PETERSBURG, May 12 (RIA Novosti, Maxim Nichiporenko) - An oil spill covering an area of roughly 6,000 square meters has been detected on a river that empties into the Gulf of Finland, emergency services reported Friday.
"The total pollution area is about 6,000 square meters. Some spots are over 300 meters long, six meters wide and from one to five meters thick," the St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region environment and agriculture oversight service said, adding that emergency measures are being implemented to contain the slick.
"The Yermilovka River empties into Yermilovskaya Bay on the Gulf of Finland. Failure to contain the spill would result in the pollution spreading further downstream and reaching the bay during the fish spawning period," the service said.
