MOSCOW, May15 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has been automatically re-elected to several bodies of the UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Foreign Ministry said Monday.
ECOSOC assists the General Assembly in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development. The council has 54 members, all of whom are elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term.
Russia has been reelected to the executive council of the World Food Program (WFP) and the governing council of the UN Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT), the ministry said.
"This result shows that ECOSOC member countries support Russia's consistent policy, aimed at promoting the authority of the main UN socio-economic body and strengthen its coordinating role regarding the activities of funds, programs and specialized institutions at the UN," the ministry said in a statement.
