* At the 37th Chess Olympiad 2006 in Turin (through June 4):

- The Russian men's team, seeded No. 1, lost to France (5) 1.5-2.5 in Round 9. Russia shares fourth place with Ukraine (4) with 23.5 points. Armenia (3) leads with 26.5 points, followed by China (12) with 25.5 points, and France with 24 points.

- The top-seeded Russian women's team drew with China (6) 1.5-1.5 in Round 9. Russia is in second place with 20.5 points. Ukraine (2) leads with 21 points. Georgia (3) is third with 19 points. Russia will play Bulgaria (10), currently in fifth place, and Ukraine will face Georgia in round 10.

* At the $18.2-mln Roland Garros Grand Slam series tennis tournament in Paris, France (through June 11):

Women's singles:

- Dinara Safina, seeded No. 14, advanced to the third round, defeating Hana Sromova (Czech Republic) 6-0, 6-2

- Maria Kirilenko (20) advanced to the second round, beating Severine Bremond (France) 1-6, 6-2, 8-6

- Two-time French Open semifinalist and No.3-seed Nadezhda Petrova suffered a shock 2-6, 2-6 defeat at the hands of Akiko Morigami (Japan) in the first round

Women's doubles

- Anna Chakvetadze and Yelena Vesnina advanced to the second round, beating Stephanie Foretz (France) and Antonella Serra Zanetti (Italy) 6-4, 6-3

- Yekaterina Bychkova and Mervana Jugic-Salkic (Bosnia and Herzegovina) beat Russian duo Vera Dushevina and Galina Voskoboeva 6-4, 6-3

Men's singles:

- Sixth-seeded Nikolai Davydenko advanced to the third round when Flavio Saretta (Brazil) retired in the second set due to injury

- Mikhail Yuzhny failed to advance to the third round, losing to Carlos Moya (Spain) 3-6, 4-6, 2-6

- Marat Safin lost to No.9-seed Fernando Gonzalez (Chile) 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 1-6 in the first round

* Dinamo St. Petersburg finished third in the Russian men's basketball championships, edging out UNICS Kazan 71:70 at home in the fifth leg of the SuperLeague best-of-five bronze-medal series
