* Russia's Vera Zvonareva won the $200,000 DFS Classic WTA tennis tournament in Birmingham, U.K., defeating Jamea Jackson from the United States 7-6 (14-12), 7-6 (7-6) in the final

* Vera Zvonareva was rated 30th in the WTA Tour Race rankings announced Monday by the WTA, the governing body of women's professional tennis, a leap of 25 positions after winning the Classic WTA tennis tournament. Five Russian tennis players were included in the WTA top ten: Svetlana Kuznetsova (2), Nadezhda Petrova (4), Maria Sharapova (6), Yelena Dementyeva (8), Dinara Safina (10)

* Russia's Marat Safin moved up to 66th place in the new ATP Tour Race ratings announced by the ATP, the governing body of men's professional tennis

* Russia's Yelena Vesnina moved into the second round of the $175,000 WTA Ordina Open Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, after defeating Julia Schruff from Germany in the first round 6-2, 6-3

* Russia's national handball team qualified for the 2007 Handball World Championship in Germany after defeating Switzerland 44-28

* Russia's women's soccer team defeated Ireland 2-0 away in qualifying for World Cup China 2007
