Women's singles:

- Russia's Maria Sharapova (4) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating her compatriot Yelena Dementyeva (7) in straight sets 6-1, 6-4

Men's singles:

- Russia's Dmitry Tursunov (27) failed to advance to the quarterfinals after loosing to Jarkko Nieminen (22) from Finland 5-7, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6), 7-9

Mixed doubles:

- Russia's Vera Zvonaryova and Andy Ram from Israel advanced to the next round after defeating Eleni Daniilidou from Greece and Chris Haggard from South Africa 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

- Russia's Vera Dushevina and Wesley Moodie from South Africa advanced to the next round after defeating Shahar Peer from Israel and Kevin Ulyett from Zimbabwe 6-3, 6-4

* Dick Advocaat arrived in St. Petersburg to take charge as head coach of Zenit St. Petersburg soccer club

* The organizing committee of the Russian Equestrian Tournament, which will run July 12-16, announced the tournament would have 4.1 million rubles ($152,000) in prize money

* Russian athletes won four gold, three silver and three bronze medals at the 2006 Athens IAAF Tsiklitiria Super Grand Prix in Greece
